Living with Multiple Sclerosis Part 1 - by Desiree

When I was approximately 16 I began having debilitating back pain, which would come and go over time. Along with the back pain came dizzy spells and muscle tremors, upon going to my family physician he said I am "over doing" my sports and not drinking enough water. I had my first child at 19, and still the back pain would come and go along with the dizziness, and again I was told I am not drinking enough water, and now my back pain maybe a side-effect from my epidural which I received during child-birth.

My next major event was when I fainted and had no recollection of what had happened, my husband found me on the floor with two large bumps on my head. He immediately took me to the emergency room; I was given a CT scan and common bld work and again sent home with the instructions to drink more water because I was dehydrated. The last incident which happened that caused me to really know there was more than dehydration was studying for a college exam and thesis paper and reading my text, no sooner did I finish my readings I had forgotten what I had just read, I would forget simple things such as what school I went too, exactly where I graduated from high school, and even my dad’s name, this symptom came and went but progressively got worse, I again went to my family doctor who told me I might have an inner ear infection. I was outraged by this, I simply told him I know there is more than that wrong and I want a scan of my brain (I have a healthcare background) I even went as far as stating if he would not listen to my requests I would be forced to contact the medical board because of my consistent and documented problems with cognition, further in depth examination is warranted. He agreed to order the MRI and was shocked by what it showed, he immediately sent me to a Neurologist who ordered a series of test including another MRI and a Spinal tap (that was not fun).
