Alternative Lung Cancer Treatment

Lung Cancer: 9 out of 10 times caused by smoking

Increasing numbers of patients are trying various alternative treatments for lung cancer, in most cases as an addition to (rather than a replacement for) more conventional treatment offered in a hospital environment.

Many doctors are skeptical about the benefits of alternative or complementary therapies when it comes to treating lung cancer sufferers. After all, conventional medicine is based on scientific fact which proves that there are benefits to certain treatments. Very few complementary or alternative medicines have been researched scientifically and some physicians believe that these therapies can give people false hope and in some cases may even be harmful – particularly if someone suddenly stops a conventional treatment in favor of an alternative one.

That said, millions of people throughout the world have benefited from alternative therapies and swear by their effectiveness. The general rule of thumb for many patients is that if an alternative treatment works for them and is not harmful, then it’s got to be worth a try.

Lung Cancer Treatment Centers

Many cancer treatment centers offer complementary therapies alongside conventional treatment. Counseling can help people deal with living with lung cancer, while meditation and yoga are excellent for calming the mind and keeping the body fit.

The Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is particularly useful for people with lung cancer. It’s a safe and very gentle therapy which focuses on a person’s posture. By correcting the posture and easing tension in the body (particularly the lung area) it can actually help people breathe better by allowing the lungs to take in more air.

Treating Lung Cancer with Acupuncture

Acupuncture is also a popular alternative treatment for people with lung cancer. Tiny needles are inserted in various points around the body to help restore any energy imbalance which may be causing symptoms and to stimulate the body’s own healing process. For some people, symptoms associated with their cancer have stabilised and in some cases improved after a course of acupuncture. Using a qualified, reputable practitioner is important – don’t try this one at home!

Treating Lung Cancer with Homeopathy

Homeopathy uses a holistic approach by focusing not just on the lung cancer but also on other factors such as the person’s state of mind, background and family. A natural remedy, drawn from plants, minerals and even some poisons, is then tailor-made for the patient. These remedies are based on giving a person a small amount of a substance which can bring on similar symptoms to those they already have. Homeopathy is based on the principle of treating like with like.

Beware quacks and false advertising

But beware the quacks who claim that they can cure lung cancer - they are everywhere, particularly on the internet.

Cancer sufferers are inevitably vulnerable to the advertising advances of charlatans who proclaim a miracle cure. But no reputable therapists claim their treatments can actually cure lung cancer. They may offer benefits to the patient but they stop short of offering a cure.

The important thing to remember is that if you are considering any alternative therapies consult your doctor first and if he or she gives you the green light just make sure you choose a reputable practitioner.
